What is Baptism?
I remember when I wanted to be baptized as a young adult I struggled to find someone to explain what baptism was all about. I knew that I wanted to be baptized but I didn't understand the 'why' of baptism. Fast forward a number of years and having baptized a number of people I can offer you this simple explanation.
Baptism is an outward declaration of our internal decision. When we get baptized we are saying openly that I now follow Jesus; that He is now the Lord of my life and I am His disciple.
There are three reasons why a person should be baptized.
Firstly, we understand what Jesus did on the cross for us. Jesus who is God came to earth in human form, paid the price on the cross, taking our sin upon himself so we could know God again. His death and resurrection are the foundation of our faith.
Secondly, Jesus was baptized and He is our example. Jesus was baptized just before He started His earthly ministry and He did so because He wanted to set an example that we should follow.
Thirdly, we identify with the death and resurrection of Jesus. Going into the water signifies that our old self has gone and as we are raised out of the water we acknowledge the new life we have in Jesus.
