Day 4: Time Well Spent
Please notice with me that the woman left her water jar! In fact, highlight or underline that phrase (John 4:28). When you’ve been in the presence of Jesus, you just aren’t that thirsty for the things of this world anymore.
The woman of Samaria left more than her jug behind. She walked away from the past she thought would always have a grip on her. She left the weight of her jar and the heaviness of the shame she carried every day as she walked to and from Jacob’s well. Then she walked into a future she never dreamed possible. The woman could leave behind what she came to get, because she had received everything she needed from Jesus. Time spent with the Wonderful One, the Counselor, is always time well spent.
Years ago, I carried my water jug all over to the wells of the world, wanting to be validated, fulfilled, satisfied, heard, and appreciated. The wells of shopping, soap operas, socializing, and serving in church. I would walk away full but shortly after would be parched again. It wasn’t until I started investing in time with Jesus, reading God’s Word, and submitting to what the Spirit, the Counselor, wanted to do in my life that I began to understand what this woman experienced that hot day at the well in Samaria.
God loved us enough to send His Son for us. Jesus loved us enough to die on the cross so we could live eternally. And the Spirit loves us enough to tell us the truth. Only someone who really loves you and knows you tells the truth, even if the truth will temporarily hurt.
We often go looking for a better well. We measure our value by the number of likes on our social media posts, our friend counts on Facebook, and followers on Instagram. We determine our knowledge by the number of degrees on our walls or dollars in our bank accounts. But the wells of the world will always leave us dry.
Our Wonderful Counselor, the Holy Spirit, who dwells in the life of every believer, is better than any well. He’s a river deep and wide, flowing endlessly with mercy, grace, love, knowledge, wisdom, and counsel. Our Wonderful Counselor is the water we’ve all been looking for.
Conversations with Him will cause us to be honest about our weaknesses, inspire us to grow in our faith, and propel us in the direction of His will for our lives. When we spend time with Jesus Everlasting, we will learn that we are,
• Wise women who can become wiser through our study of His Word;
• Fulfilled women who have so much to give others;
• Loved women, not because of what we do or have, but because of what has been done and given for us; and
• Strong women who have been empowered by the riches of the God of the universe.
