New Believer Guide for Kids

DAY 2 OF 3

Read Your Bible

By Nick Kalb

Story

The Bible is HUGE, and sometimes it's not very easy or fun for kids to read (like the book of Leviticus)! When I was a little kid, I only liked to look at some of the pictures in my kid’s Bible (most Bible characters weren't much fun to look at). I loved reading comic books and kid’s encyclopedias instead. What kinds of books do you like best?

I only became interested in reading the Bible when I started following God for myself.  After I made the decision to follow God and He became my best friend, reading the Bible also became fun! That's how I got to know Him.

I was a teenager when the Bible finally came alive for me, but that doesn’t mean you need to wait until you’re older to enjoy reading God’s Word for yourself! So where can you start when it comes to reading the Bible?

“How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth!—Psalm 119:103 (NIV)

Think

Reading the Bible isn’t like reading other books. We read other books to learn or to have fun. The Bible is more like eating a meal! Reading the Bible fills our hearts with God, because we spend that time thinking about Him. When we think about Him, we’ll begin to notice what He’s thinking about and how we can enjoy knowing Him. That’s why we need to “eat” His Word every day!

I read a chapter of the Bible to my kids every night. I talk about the parts I find interesting, and then I give them time to ask questions. As I read and talk about God’s Word with them, lots of important things come up for us to discuss as a family. It's awesome!

Do Something

This part is important for parents! In order to make the Bible meaningful for kids, you need to be involved. Don’t go too fast to make up for lost time. Start small and build a discipline of reading the Bible to your kids every night, if possible. One chapter is long enough to be meaningful, but short enough to hold your kid’s interest. Start with Genesis or one of the Gospels.

The Bible Project on YouTube has great videos that are interesting for both kids and adults. Whether topical studies or a commentary on each book of the Bible, there’s something for the whole family.

Besides children's Bibles, there are a lot of fascinating books for kids to get them interested in the Bible. Bible Infographics for Kids, The Brick Bible for Kids, and The Action Bible are great places to start!

Pray

Dear God, help me get to know You through Your Word. Thank you for giving me a book I can use to learn about You and Your ways. Help me to make a habit of reading Your Word daily. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen!
