Love God Greatly: In the BeginningSample
When Paul visited Athens, he was greatly disturbed by the number of idols he saw there. He even saw an altar “to an unknown god.” Paul stood up in front of the people and began to explain to them who this unknown god was, how it was in fact, the God of creation, the Lord of heaven and earth. Paul explained how this God had created the earth in its entirety, including all of the human race. God had specifically chosen for each person the time and place where they should live in order that they would search for and find God.
When we read genealogies in Scripture it is easy to become distracted or indifferent to the information they contain. However, when we look closely, we gain a much clearer picture of the purpose and intent of God in creating humans. God had an incredible plan when He created the earth; everything was made for a specific purpose, with specific intention to bring glory to God. Humanity is no different. God has a specific plan for each person, family, community, and nation. He knows all and He specifically places them in both the times and places where they are to live.
What an awesome God! That He not only knows us intimately, but that even before we were born, He chose when and where we would live. These people mentioned in Genesis became families, clans, and nations that greatly impacted the world with culture, industry, and art, both for good and for evil. While many choose to turn from Him, God is still in control and sovereign over each member of the human race. He desires that none should perish, but that all would come to Him. No matter when or where we live, God has a plan and a purpose for our lives and for His glory.
Prayer:
Father God, You have created me with a specific plan and purpose for making Your name known. Show me how I can glorify and honor You today. Help me be a light to those around me that I may point them to Your Son, Jesus Christ. Amen.
