DAY 6 OF 8

The Cities of Refuge

And he shall remain in that city until he has stood before the congregation for judgment, until the death of him who is high priest at the time. Then the manslayer may return to his own town and his own home, to the town from which he fled.'"

Joshua 20:6 (ESV)

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

Psalm 46:1 (ESV)

According to the Lord’s instructions to Moses in Numbers 35:6-34 and Deuteronomy 19:1-13, the cities of refuge were established to provide sanctuary for anyone who killed another person unintentionally. Here, the offender was protected until he stood trial, and, if judged innocent, he was required to live there until the high priest died. The six Levitical cities chosen as cities of refuge—three east of the Jordan and three west—were strategically located so that they would not take more than half a day to reach.

The cities of refuge are metaphors for Christ. Sinners seek refuge from their sin and its punishment in Christ, like the manslayer sought refuge in the cities of refuge. Christ is the only place and only way we can find rest and safety. Christ welcomes everyone, regardless of their background, to provide refuge and rest. Just as the cities of refuge provided protection only within the set boundaries, we receive the covenantal protection of God only if we remain in Jesus.

Prayer:

Father God, thank You for Your heart of mercy. May we always remain in You and cling to You as our refuge. In Jesus' name, Amen.

About this Plan

Through the Bible: Joshua

The book of Joshua records the Israelites’ conquest of the Canaanite Land and testifies of God’s faithfulness to His promise. Just as the author says in 21:45, “Not one of all the LORD's good promises to Israel failed; every one was fulfilled.” Similarly, when life hits hard, always remember to be strong and courageous and cling onto God’s promises. Sooner or later, all will come to pass.
