Mindfulness

DAY 1 OF 4

Being present with others

When we hear or think of the term "mindfulness”, we often think of quiet spaces with no noise. Yet, mindfulness can be practiced in any space whether it is loud or quiet.

Mindfulness is being present or fully available.

As I write, I have an infant. He received some shots recently. The day he received his shots, the shot sites suddenly became more uncomfortable and painful. So, he started crying. I had a lot going on. I had papers to write, business on my mind, etc. Yet, I told myself they would have to wait. I decided to be present for him and give my little one undivided attention. He cried. I cried. We cried and we felt better.

When I chose to be present for him, I felt his pain even more. In that moment, my eyes became teary and I did not hold back my tears while telling the little one “mommy is here.” I was physically and emotionally available. Saying “mommy is here” was not enough. I had to truly be there in words and in deed. Compassion was given, secure attachment was enhanced, and our relationship was strengthened.

Being present and available is like a seed, it has the potential to yield a great harvest over time if we plant it. It allows us to mourn with those who are mourning (Romans 12:15), and bear another’s burdens (Galatians 6:2). It positions us to sense the unspoken pain of our friends before they commit suicide. It positions us to sense the broken heart of a child who is being abused in a home that seems perfect.

I have no doubt that God wants us to carry one another’s burdens and bring those burdens to Him in prayer, immediately. God does not want us to be self-centered or self-absorbed, He wants us to seek the good of others (1 Corinthians 10:24).

The most beautiful thing is that as we walk in God's will and presence, this also allows us to be emotionally and spiritually sensitive to the emotional and spiritual needs of those with whom we interact; so that we can fulfill the great commission and have an eternal impact, showing the love of Jesus to others.

Today, start with those who are closest to you; be emotionally available, carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ. (Galatians 6:2)

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for Your presence in my life. Teach me how to live a selfless life in Your presence, in Jesus' name.
