DAY 67 OF 90

Week 10

Acts 27

The Treasure

We find Paul and a cast of characters experiencing true adventure on the high seas in Acts 27. Luke, the writer of Acts and companion of Paul, had his work cut out for him while penning this chapter. They are prisoners on a storm-tossed ship and they are under the constant threat of death.

This chapter describes the storm as being so violent that they needed to throw overboard the ship’s cargo. Luke and many of the other prisoners probably assumed they were next to be thrown overboard. Who can blame them? Haven’t we all had times where we wondered what was next and assumed the absolute worst? But Paul had a secret weapon, a treasure, that would save the day–God’s Word and His promise.

Paul explains to the men that, during the night, an angel of God had stood before him with some good news: God planned to spare every single man on the ship and they would find safety. Paul knew fully well what was written in Job 42:2 was true: God can do anything and His plans cannot be thwarted.

God’s Word and His promises to us are alive and well. We just have to trust that God knows the way and will show it to us in His timing. He won’t leave us nor forsake us (Deuteronomy 31:6). The storm may do some damage and the future may seem uncertain, but we can always remember the concluding thoughts of this chapter: “And so it was that all were brought safely to land.” When we keep our eyes on Jesus, we can trust Him to show us the way.

Family Connection: Create a boat out of a folded piece of paper! Have your family open up the Bible to Acts 27 and take turns reading the story. Act it out as you go using the boat you created! What happened to Paul? God took care of him! We will face hard moments in our lives that feel a lot like a storm, but just like God took care of Paul, He will always care for us!
