Here’s My Heart

God is a personal God who desires a personal relationship with each of us. We don’t have to come to God as if we were somebody else. We can come to him just as we are. A lot of times that means I start my prayer time with a simple plea: “God, show me my heart. Show me where I am spiritually right now. God, show me truth about myself, show me the way you see me.”

That can be a sobering prayer.

When we think about God’s work in our lives, we usually focus on some big rollercoaster moment. But we really get to know Jesus when we’re in line for the rollercoaster. Every day as we pray, dig into his Word, go to work, go to school, sit at lunch, and drive home, we grow in Christ as we take time in our hearts and minds to stand in line with the Lord.

The exhilarating rollercoaster moments serve only to show where we are with God. As much as we think the high points shape us, they only reveal how we’ve attended to our spiritual lives to that point. It’s the same with our quiet times. We go into our quiet times wanting the earth to move. But it’s not about the rollercoaster ride anymore. It’s just you and God, and you’re not in it for the buzz of an emotional experience. Think about your best friend. You’re not looking for an adventure every time you hang out with her. You just hang out and talk about nothing and you’re fine. Let’s aspire to be so intimate with the Lord.

This song is the simple prayer of a believer that says, “Lord, here’s my heart. Take all of me. I am alive and free and healed only because you alone are strong and sure and enduring.”

The truth is that God’s patience with all of us—believers and unbelievers—is amazing. I can’t imagine what it’s like for a holy God to watch us down here, running ourselves ragged and chasing our tails, scratching all of our itches and thinking we’ve found our answers.

May we all stop and sing with a prayer that says, “God, help me open my heart to you and trust you so you will do something only you can do.”
