Hello Baby, I Love You! Abc's for Young MomsSample
S
is for Support System
Having a support system in place eases some of the unexpected challenges you will experience. Wisdom and humility tell us to pray and plan.
When you live near parents or friends you’ve known most of your life it can be easy to put together a support system. But if you live far away from any family or have just recently moved to a new area it can be a bit intimidating to put together a group of people in your life to help.
When our daughter was a single mom she found help through her church. Another friend of ours had a group of moms she knew from her church and they would take turns helping one another out.
While I was raising our children we were far from family there was a young lady down the street who came as a mother‘s helper two days a week for a couple of hours after school. Just knowing that she was coming alleviated much stress for me.
Support doesn’t have to just come from people. You can find support by going to the library during the week. Or the regular walk in the park. Putting on fun music in the mid-afternoon would bring a change of pace and an element of delight to our days as we danced and sang. And when they were very young I would be dancing and singing with them in my arms and as time went on they would join right in!
All too often people use the television set as a babysitter. I encourage you to avoid this as much as possible. Limiting television viewing is wise. Studies show how helpful it is to keep television viewing to a minimum, particularly during younger years. Screen viewing before the age 18 months has lasting negative effects on children's development.
