God’s Word Always Fulfills Its Purpose

God’s Word never fails to fulfill its intended purpose. We may not fully understand God’s purpose, but whatever it is when His Word goes out, you can count on it being fulfilled.

God’s Word is like the rain and snow. They fall. The earth is watered. Plants grow. Life flourishes. The rain and snow always fulfill their purpose. It is the same for the Word of God. Perhaps you are talking with a troubled friend and John 14:1 comes to mind: “Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me.”

Or you are facing a big decision in your life and you repeat aloud the promise of James 1:5: “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.”

Or a friend is grieving a loss, and you remember the unforgettable words of Psalm 23:4: “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.”

Perhaps you are feeling overwhelmed by life’s pressures and you recall Jesus’s promise in Matthew 11:28: “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”

In all of these instances and a thousand more, God’s Word will have its way. The Bible is powerful. The Bible is fruitful. It always accomplishes God’s purposes. That is why it is absolutely essential to read it, study it, learn it, memorize it, cite it, and share it. Saturate your soul with God’s Word until it spills over.

When I was a young Christian in the 1970s, Francis Schaeffer was perhaps the leading Christian writer for college students and intellectuals. He once wrote of the Bible:

"I don’t love this book because it has a leather cover and golden edges. I don’t love it as a ‘holy book.’ I love it because it is God’s book. Through it, the Creator of the universe has told us who He is, how to come to Him through Christ, who we are, and what all reality is. Without the Bible, we wouldn’t have anything. It may sound melodramatic, but sometimes in the morning I reach for my Bible and just pat it. I am so thankful for it. If the God who is there had created the earth and then remained silent, we wouldn’t know who He is. But the Bible reveals the God who is there; that’s why I love it."
