Habakkuk – The Man Who Asked QuestionsSample
Day 2 – Habakkuk Asks God Questions
Habakkuk was a righteous and good man and tried hard to live his life without sin. He felt discouraged, though, when he saw the sinfulness of God’s people and felt that all his hard work to be good was in vain. It looked like other people were getting away with their wickedness and not being punished or disciplined.
He didn’t understand why it seemed that the wicked were getting away with their sin while he was working so very hard to be good. So he turned to God and asked questions.
“God, why do you tolerate wrong?”
“God, why do the wicked get away with their injustice?”
God knew that Habakkuk was trying hard to understand, even though his questions sounded a little like complaining. God answered Habakkuk and the answer was a hard one for Habakkuk to hear.
It was almost too much for him to understand and it made him frightened!
God told Habakkuk that yes, there is a punishment for evil. The wicked were not going to get away with their sin.
He said, “I am going to do something in your days, Habakkuk, that you would not believe even if you were told. I am raising up the Babylonians to punish the wickedness of my people.”
This made Habakkuk scared! The Babylonians were a fierce people and they were destroying every nation around them. Surely, Habakkuk thought, I have misunderstood what God is about to do.
He went to God again with hard questions.
“Are the wicked Babylonians going to keep on destroying nations without mercy?”
“Are You going to let Your people be completely destroyed?”
Then Habakkuk waited for God’s answer.
Sometimes life is hard to understand, but God is always there to help us understand.
Let’s pray: Dear God, I believe you are a good God and I want to be good just like you! Help me to trust you when things happen that I don’t understand. In Jesus name, amen!
