Better Words, Better Actions: PraiseLive's 30 Day DevotionalSample
We have four important aspects in our giving to others. First, we should give generously. As followers of Jesus, we need to have a “heart to give”. Some people are generous by nature. And that’s good. But we are all commanded to have a heart to give so that giving comes naturally. Second, give intentionally, with a prayerful, thoughtful, deliberate decision. Third, we are to give cheerfully, not under pressure or force. God honors cheerful gifts (though I like to say He will receive gifts from grouches too). But, remember, cheerful giving blesses God. Fourth, we give compassionately, placing ourselves in the shoes of the person or ministry. In the words of Jesus, give as we would like to receive. It’s the bottom line of the giving of ourselves to God. Do as you would like others to do for you.
When we do this, God promises to provide. When we trust God in our giving, He blesses us in many unexpected ways, not just financial. So the blessing of giving goes three ways: God is blessed by our generosity. The receiver benefits from the tangible gift. And the giver receives amazing freedom and joy in practicing the spiritual gift of generosity. May God direct and bless you as you seek Him in this vital stewardship aspect of your life.
Reflection Question:
What are you? Are you a giver or a taker? Are you generous towards God and others; or are you a hoarder of God’s blessing?
Praise + Prayer:
Lord, you are Jehovah-Jireh, my provider. Thank you for your great generosity to me. Now help me by your Holy Spirit to give me a heart to give. Create in me a spirit of generosity. And lead me to those who have the greatest need. Touch my heart with the things that move your heart. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Action Idea:
Take time tonight with paper and pen to assess your personal finances and find ways to be generous. Ask God to reveal specific individuals or ministries that might benefit from your resources, great or small. Then ask God to place in your heart and mind the specific amount He would have you give. Listen for His voice. You’ll be surprised at what he might lead you to give. Then enjoy the joy that comes from giving.
