Confidence is Key  

Scary movies are stressful. Not only must you deal with whatever badness the filmmakers prescribe, but the music also anticipates the ensuing doom. Essentially, producers have discovered how to elicit a fear response from the viewer. 

Fear presents itself as a formidable bushwhacker. Like the musical score to Jaws, in anticipation of shark attacks, terror builds internally before any tragedy. We find David in this familiar scenario. But much like the movie creators, David’s enemy has positioned hordes to sprawl out across the landscape, for dramatic effect. This was an expedient military strategy. 

Our Enemy does the same thing. Satan illuminates how sinister is your situation. You are then justified in your panic-stricken state. Without the musical crescendo, you become certain the Boogeyman is, indeed, by the mailbox waiting to snatch you or your children.

This maneuver is legendary. I’m not saying the tactic is merely a mirage. A labyrinthine enemy camped on the horizon never was for David. Those hordes were inarguably legitimate. But you and I should be mindful the purpose is to unhinge us so we will forget to trust our God. 

Don’t do it. Instead, let’s take our cues from David and use the Word of God.

David responds with preaching to himself, “No. Not gonna do it. My heart shall not fear.” His declaration is sure, confident not in himself, but in the One greater: His Strength, THE Light, and the only One with saving power. 

No doubt, at times, it seems like an army bent on your destruction is camped within your aerial view. That reality might be indisputable. Before a blue funk unnerves you, take these words from Scripture. Pray them in your fight against fear. Find confidence in meeting your situation in the Lord. 

Prayer for Battling Fear

Dear Lord, 

For being THE Light of life, we thank you. Because You are our very Strength, help us to know there is nothing for which to be afraid. Banish every doubt by reminding us of what You have done in our lives previously. Whatever formidable situations can be viewed from our vantage point, enable us to see these as calculated military maneuvers to rattle us. Give us faith enough to trust You through the hordes, and the unconscionable racing through our minds. In the hair-raising situations of life, be our confidence. In our battle against fear, bring us victory.
