Table for Two 

God allows us to walk through trials to slow us down. You cannot press fast-forward and skip important chapters of your life. There is a reason for the season; God wants you to sit in it and grow. If you try to press fast-forward, you would miss out on enjoying your life. The ability to skip trials would push you into being selfish. We are naturally streaked and stained with selfishness but we would be even worse then because life would be only about what we want. 

Singles are a great group of people. There are great life lessons in this season of waiting. You are not distracted nor being pulled in all different directions. This does not mean you are not busy; it means that you have time and freedom. Paul encourages people to stay single, not to put a restraint on anybody but so that they could love the Lord above everything else. 

You are single so that you may be devoted to the Lord without distraction. You were created to please the Lord. You can have a greater focus on living in undistracted devotion to Him. What happens for some of us is that we believe our devotion is to find a spouse. I recall walking into a room and thinking, “Lord, is my wife in this room right now?” But we cannot spend our time wondering such things. Instead, let’s change our thoughts into, “Lord, where can I make a difference in this season of my life?” Do not get stuck; grow in your relationship with the Lord; surrender to God; take the freedom that God gives you. 

Once a month, I spend a day by myself. It is my sabbatical. I will pray and talk to God. But since I do not know how to cook, I will eat out as well. So, I went to a restaurant on one of my sabbatical days and told the host, “Table for one.” As I sat down and waited at the table, I felt the Lord say to my heart, “It is never a table for one; it is always a table for two. I am with you. I am right here with you.” 

Whether you are widowed, divorced or unmarried, it is always a table for two. God is with you. He is the love of your life.
