Everything in your life is spiritual

So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.

This charge, to do all for God’s glory, embraces all of life. Every single thing you do, do it for God’s honor, for God’s glory, for the sake of His name. 

In fact, if you cannot do it for God’s glory, then don’t do it. It is, perhaps, easy to worship, preach, give, or serve for God’s glory. But this command is not relegated to the spiritual things. 

In fact, it teaches us that everything is spiritual—even everyday things like eating and drinking. Wash dishes for God’s glory. Vacuum floors for God’s glory. Take care of children for God’s glory. Park cars at church for God’s glory.

This principle has enormous implications for our work. In fact, this truth transforms work into worship. Brother Lawrence, the seventeenth-century Catholic monk, felt he could worship God in the kitchen as well as in the cathedral: “I turn my little omelet in the pan for the love of God. When I can do nothing else, it is enough to have picked up a straw for the love of God.”

And what about students? 1 Corinthians 10:31 is your deliverance from drudgery. In The Flight, John White discovered the relevance of this truth while he was a medical student:

“For you Lord,” became my motivation… The drudgery melted away and a sense of satisfaction and gratitude took its place. Exams or no exams, I would study for God. And I took time off to play tennis with a carefree spirit. I don’t mean that I forgot I had a certain number of months to complete a course. But my sense of responsibility had changed. I was no longer responsible to pass the examination. Rather, I was responsible to use my study time in a way that pleased God. I covered the same ground but was carefree and enjoyed what I was doing. I certainly learned a lot more, though how this affected my marks I do not know. Nor do I care. I was no longer working for grades, but for Christ.

The simplest task, the most routine duty at work: everything becomes a sacred act of worship when it is done for God.
