DAY 9 OF 50

Challenge 9

JOSHUA, A LEADER OF FAITH AND COURAGE

READ: Numbers 13:1—14:39

Today we move back to an earlier event in Joshua’s life. Israel is at a critical juncture with the people camped on the Jordan River across from the promised land. Moses sends out twelve spies to scout out the land. When they return, all twelve agree that the land is just as God promised. It is a prosperous land, full of the earth’s bounty. But there is a problem. It is also filled with a powerful people in walled cities who will have to be defeated in order to lay claim to the land. Ten of the spies decide that this will be an impossible task. Only Joshua and Caleb dissent. Yes, the task will be daunting, but they have faith in God’s ability to fulfill his promises.

An effective leader must be a person of faith and courage. Courage does not come from trusting in our own abilities, but from trust in the faithfulness of God and God’s ability to empower us to overcome even impossible barriers in our path. Such trust is built on a lifetime of decisions and experiences, big and small. What did our reading say was different about Joshua and Caleb’s perspective? How will you build trust in God’s promises?

About this Plan

The Leadership Challenge

The Bible doesn’t discuss leadership like a popular business book. However, since God is the creator of everything that exists as well as the rules and processes by which everything works, the Scriptures do provide principles and examples that give us insight and wisdom into effective leadership. The social and cultural backgrounds of the Bible are different than ours, but the Scriptures contain truth that transcends time and space.
