Atypical Advice

DAY 5 OF 6

Don’t hesitate.

You know those people who go to college really far from home—where no one from high school knows them? Super brave people, right? Or even those people who move for a new job alone or take the courageous step to step out on a limb. They’re bold.

But what if you’re not that person? What if you’re paralyzed by the fear of being alone or going out to an unfamiliar place? What if you feel like God is telling you to go, but all you want to do is stay?

Ruth, who we know as the OG “ride or die,” took a huge leap and followed Naomi back to her homeland. She was a foreigner. She left the familiar, her family, her god, her normal. Ruth would probably tell you: Go.

After they lost their husbands, Naomi decided to return to Judah. Before they even started the journey, Naomi gave both of her daughters-in-law an out. She literally told them to stay in Moab and forget about her. Orpah hugged Naomi and dipped. Ruth clung to Naomi and told her to not even think about trying to send her away. Without hesitation, Ruth decided to take the risk and go.

When we face the unknown and a risk, we are either Naomi, Orpah, or Ruth. As Naomi, we give ourselves or others an out. As Orpah, we choose comfort and ease. As Ruth, we trust God and move in faith.

Of course, it’s scary and nerve-wracking at times to take a leap. It’s easy to get caught in the details and talk yourself out of faith. We bombard ourselves with questions like: Do we have jobs lined up? Where are we going to live exactly? What’s the exact plan? How will your people feel about a foreigner coming into town?

The questions go on. But the real question is: Do you trust God?

If the answer is yes, then go. He’ll work out the details. Will there be things you do to prepare? Of course! Will there be times God is calling you to stay? Absolutely! But when you feel like God is calling you to take a leap of faith, focus on God’s direction, not your personal doubts.

Reflect: Where do you need to take a step? Has there been a time in the past where you hesitated or didn’t go when you felt you should have?

Pray: Thank You for stretching me, God. I believe that in those challenging moments of discomfort, You’re growing me. Please help me to hear Your voice clearly and to take whatever bold leap I need to take. I know my steps are ordered and that the plan You have for my life is more than I could ever ask, think, or imagine. I trust You, God. Thank You for walking with me and before me. In Jesus’ name, amen.
