Following Jesus

DAY 14 OF 15

Following Jesus takes confession and repentance

So what happens when I feel like I’ve blown it?

Following Jesus isn’t easy, and we will all fall short more times than we’d like to admit. But, there’s good news! When you mess up, you can try again.

Nothing can separate us from God’s love. Our salvation is secure. Every day is a fresh start, a new opportunity to follow Jesus and experience God’s mercy. That’s not a reason for us to not try. It’s motivation to keep going.

Have you ever had a coach or teacher who believed in you more than you believed in yourself? When you were ready to quit, they were right there reminding you what you were made of. That’s who the Holy Spirit is to us.

When we fail, the enemy tries to tell us that failing makes us a failure. But the Holy Spirit reminds us that God’s love for us has not changed. His plans for us are still good.

Every time we fall short or fall down, it’s an opportunity to realize just how much we needed  Jesus to save us and just how kind God is to forgive us.

Think about it like this: When someone is self destructing, the kind, loving thing to do is to stop them. Because God loves us and wants what’s best for us, He’s going to give us every opportunity to acknowledge our sin and turn away from it. This is called confession and repentance.

It’s hard in the moment. But every time we confess and repent, we let go of an old way of thinking or believing. And each time that happens, we become a little more like Jesus.

Reflect:

  • Is there anything you need to confess and repent of today?
  • What does the enemy want you to believe about that sin? What does God say is true of you in spite of that sin?
  • We’re often scared to approach God when we’ve messed up. What’s one way that confession and repentance can strengthen your relationship with God?
