Perfectionism

DAY 1 OF 3

Perfectionism is the lie that the way God made you is not good enough.

At work, perfectionism can be paralyzing. Erin, a high-powered marketing consultant, describes the torment of being a perfectionist:

“I worked hard, and I got promoted, but it just didn’t feel like it was enough. I felt like I was pretending, like I was an imposer. I worried that any day now I was going to drop one of these spinning plates.”

Perfectionism was eating Erin up inside.

“On the outside I looked super successful. On the inside I was a nervous wreck.”

Erin’s “aha” moment came when she linked the truth in Psalm 139 to her concept of herself.

In Psalm 139, Erin read that God knew her completely. While perfectionism told her that she was never good enough, the Bible told her that she was “fearfully and wonderfully made” (Psalm 139:14).

“If your works are wonderful,” Erin finally said to God, “and you made me, then that means I'm wonderful too.”

You are wonderfully made too. You don’t need to torture yourself in an impossible attempt to be perfect.

Prayer: God, thank you for making me who I am. Let me see myself through your eyes. You are perfect, God. Amen.
