Love God Greatly: BeatitudesSample
On a hot summer day, our bodies need water. Yet we often feel the pang of thirst and reach for a soda, a milkshake, or an iced coffee. We know what we need, yet we reach for something else, thinking that it will satisfy. Jeremiah preached to a people who knew who God was and what He had done for them, yet they kept reaching for idols that never fully satisfied. They had access to the fountain of living waters, yet they kept reaching for broken cisterns that leaked out all the water that their bodies desperately needed.
We, too, turn to other sources of comfort or fulfillment: possessions, relationships, accomplishments, indulgent food. Just like a leaking cistern, these options quickly prove how broken and unsatisfying they really are. Yet we come back time and time again, thinking that this time they will give us what we really need. God's promise to us is that His fountain of water will never run dry. We will always be satisfied when we genuinely desire Him.
God, You are good and faithful. Thank You for promising to meet my needs and satisfy my longings. Teach me to turn to You when I am afraid, hurt, and unsatisfied.
