I Am He, the Answer to Your Deepest Needs
Many of us go through life repeating the same mistakes over and over. We feel trapped in the vicious circle of a dull and automated life. Routine takes over. We get busy and we fill the hours of our tight agendas with endless activities that give little to no attention to the most profound needs of our hearts.
The Samaritan woman also felt trapped in a cycle of failed relationships that were not the answer to her deepest needs. That day at the well, she was looking for water, a typical activity, part of her daily routine. The encounter with Jesus led her to ask herself those questions she had been suppressing inside for years—questions that only brave people dare to ask.
Samaritans differed from Jews in their worship of God, blending pagan gods with the Jewish God. “I know that Jews worship God only in Jerusalem. Our ancestors have always worshipped near this well, on this mountain” (John 4:20). She was finally able to ask those questions that she had pushed away for such a long and painful time. Help me understand how to live, how to worship correctly! Maybe that is what is missing in my life.
He kindly responded to her question, “A time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks” (verse 23). He added, “God is spirit, and His worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth” (verse 24).
She felt her own spirit begin to lift.
“Sir, it has been promised that the Messiah will come, and when He does, He will explain everything to us.”
Jesus declared, “I, the one speaking to you–I am he” (verse 26).
This revelation stunned her. All her life she had searched for something or someone who could fill the void in her soul. She longed for value and purpose. She hungered for meaning and truth. Her deep need for safety, companionship and joy had driven her to the arms of men who could never fill the ache in her soul.
Are you looking for meaning? For value, purpose, truth? Jesus is saying to you, “I am He. I am the answer to your deepest needs. I see you, I am here for you. I am the Way and the Truth and the Life.”
