Meek, not Weak
Matthew 5:5 writes: “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.” To some, this verse may appear strange or contradicting. This is because the word “meek” can be associated with “weak”, and no one wants to be labeled that way. However, the Greek word for “meek” (praus) is not associated with weak, but “gentle”. Interestingly, Christ describes Himself as gentle (praus) and lowly in heart (Matt 11:29).
People may not like to be associated with weakness because that could reflect powerlessness. Yet, those who are meek and gentle practice power under control as God is in control of their lives! This is further evident from how Matthew 5:5 is quoted from Psalm 37:11, which writes: “But the meek shall inherit the land and delight themselves in abundant peace.”
The only way the meek can delight themselves in abundant peace is from how their confidence and identity is firmly grounded in God. We see this from Moses as he dealt with Aaron and Miriam (Num 12:1-13) with grace and forgiveness when they intended to cause harm. We also see this from how Christ said: “Father, forgive them…” (Lk 23:34) to those who treated Him brutally. The meek have no desire for revenge but to bring the fallen back to God—which shows their confidence in God and their identity as a Kingdom citizen.
Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for giving us Your beloved Son, who came not as a militant emperor, but One who was meek, gentle, and humble, born in a manger! I desire to be more like Jesus, loving those who oppress and hate me through the supernatural peace of the Holy Spirit—who now lives in me. Amen.
