Not Fair, And Yet

DAY 4 OF 7

Not Fair, But Yet

David was the new and celebrated war hero of Israel.

But sadly, that joy didn’t last long. King Saul developed a deep jealousy toward him. His jealousy was so strong that he wanted to kill him. Now, where did that even come from you wonder? David the boy who had delivered Israel from a huge defeat, now is suddenly hunted like an animal? And yet, Samuel the prophet of the Lord had anointed David as the next king of Israel, right? David knew it was but a matter of time before he sat on that very throne.

Now, it was not David who went looking for Saul. It was Saul who came after him, hunting him down. David would be more than justified in protecting himself. Then why doesn’t he do that?  Why do you think David escaped? Is it because he was afraid of Saul, or because he was not confident he could hit back and win? Absolutely not! It would have been all too easy for David, a proven war hero, to fight back and subdue Saul. But David didn’t.

David chose to take the high road.

David understood and accepted the sovereignty of God. He recognized that it was God who had chosen and anointed him as the next king of Israel. Though this struggle with Saul must have baffled him, David knew that the battle was the Lord’s, not his. He was willing for the Lord to give him the throne in His perfect time because he trusted Him wholly. In the meantime, he chose not to retaliate or take matters into his own hands. Rather, he chose to honor the Lord by not raising his hand against His anointed.

What is that difficult situation or relationship you are batting today? Are there times you think life is not fair? Times when you wonder what have you ever done to be treated like this? And yet, would you, like David, choose to take the high road and continue to trust the Lord? Would you choose not to take matters into your own hands but rather to honor Him? To honor Him through your life, not just by what you say and do but also what you think? He remains the same God. The God who came through for David will come through for you too.

Father, I choose to trust You and honor You with my difficult situations, knowing that You are my Shield and my Defender.

And yet, the truth is, how we respond to life and its tough realities, is really a choice we need to make each day.
