DAY 84 OF 86

2SAMUEL 14:
There are more lessons to learn from 2nd Samuel. Note that there is more than one way in which David did not obey God’s instructions for kings. The big one, of course, is the Bathsheba affair. But God had already said that kings should not have lots of wives. David’s daughter Tamar was raped by her half brother Amnon. And after two years, Absolom (Tamar’s brother) murdered Amnon.

PSALM 113:
Today’s poem, Psalm 113, is a song praising our incomparable God.

ROMANS 15:
When we turn to Romans 15 today, we will see that Paul continues what he was ‘on about’ in yesterday’s reading. We must accept other believers even though we don’t agree on prohibitions, practices, or rituals. Disputes over these things often come from our differing backgrounds.

Let’s pray.
Our heavenly Father, Paul’s first word in this chapter is to welcome other believers. But we have made thick walls of separation. And Paul says, “Let us stop judging one another.” Our judging and separation may not be based on food or beliefs about certain days, but we have found other things to judge one another about and to separate over. Please forgive us, Lord! How wrong we are, dear Father, when we accept your grace, but we don’t extend grace to others. In particular, Lord, convict us of the pride that makes us despise others. Let us take to heart Paul’s statement: Your Kingdom, O God, is not about what we eat or drink, or about what we don’t eat and drink, but about living in the righteousness, peace, and joy which the Holy Spirit gives. Please give us the happiness of those who find no cause for feeling guilty about what we do or consume. Today we will seek to live according to what we believe is right.
