Living for God: Devotions From Time of GraceSample
Are you hungry?
“You can call me anything you want; just don’t call me late for dinner,” goes the old gag, probably from vaudeville days. What are you hungry for right now? Food? Attention? Amusement? Challenge? As if we didn’t have enough trouble keeping our appetites in check, we face a daily barrage of advertising--print, billboards, online, radio, TV--that tries to hit an emotional trigger within us to get us to buy stuff.
Popular culture teaches us that all our appetites are normal and legitimate and get first priority. Soft drink manufacturers tell people, “Obey your thirst!” There is money to be made selling people what they want.
What do you want? What are you hungry for right now? May I invite you to ponder Jesus’ words: “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled” (Matthew 5:6). Do you have a craving for your friends’ approval? Do you have a craving for God’s approval? If you don’t have God’s approval over your life, nothing will work right. If you have God’s righteousness, bought for you with the blood of Christ and guaranteed to you through his wonderful Word, you have everything important. Everything else you really need will be provided at the right time.
You will be filled.
