Becoming Disciples

DAY 5 OF 5

Becoming Disciples

Let’s recap what we’ve learned from reading John 15. We understand that God abides in us and His desire is for us to abide in Him as well. We also covered that we are His branches and must stay connected. Just as trees lose their branches during a storm, we too can choose to disconnect from our Father, however, if we do so, something dies and doesn’t feel right. While we stay connected we will see the fruit we produce. Jesus tells us that a branch cannot bear fruit by itself, we must remain in Him. Lastly, we understand that becoming disciples not only glorifies God, but it is indeed a lifetime process. We are continuously growing and maturing in our walk with the Lord.

As disciples of Christ, we still have so much to do in following the Lord. Remember, it’s a life-time process. For some people it may mean to start praying. You may go to church, yet you never pray and talk to God. For others it may mean to start reading the Bible. Yes, attending church allows us to learn more about God’s Word, but there’s nothing like you personally reading and studying it.  The Bible will speak life and help you in your walk with Christ. Maybe you attend church, pray, and read the Bible, but now it’s time to take those steps of attending a Bible study or intentionally serving others outside of the church. Or maybe you have attended church for a while and now it’s time to get involved and serve. This process will be different for everyone. It is about spiritual growth in our personal walk with Christ.

Whatever we do, let’s do it in the name of Jesus. We do it as an invitation to serve the Lord and become His disciples. We are not social workers. We are all in the process of “becoming.” Becoming is the opposite of disconnecting. The more we become His disciples, the more we are connecting with our Father. The more we connect with God, the more we are connecting with the body of Christ (other disciples). And the more we connect with each other as a Christian community, the more we come together to do the work of God here on Earth. We are disciples of the risen Christ.

Becoming Jesus’ disciples is part of His plan. We are His extension of the good news. He created us with that purpose. He is not done with us yet, we are meant to walk with Him. Look at your life and ask yourself “how much of my time do I feed my spirit?” What does your agenda look like during the day? Just like you feed yourself breakfast, lunch and dinner or give yourself water when you’re thirsty, our souls are also hungry and thirsty for the living God. They need time to connect. Choosing to become disciples and join this life-time process requires continual connection. Jesus is the vine, and may we never forget we are the branches.

Day 4

About this Plan

Becoming Disciples

In this plan you will be blessed to read through several verses of the book of  John, chapter 15. Jesus knew His time with His 12 disciples was coming to an end but had a bigger plan not just for them but for all of us. We were called to follow Christ and walk with Him even in this time and age. Jesus tells us through a beautiful analogy that He is the vine and we are His branches. We are connected to Him, an extension of His good news, and we will bear fruit if we choose to remain in Him. Becoming disciples is His desire for His children and glorifies the Father.
