Does Everyone Have a Soul Mate? (part 1)
Love and romance should not be separated from a life of faith. We are made by God to have the feelings we have. Even so, it is often a struggle to figure out how to fit dating, love, and the idea of finding the “one” into our day-to-day lives.
We often hear the term “soul mate” on television and in movies. Even at church, we are told to wait for the perfect person God has for us. But does everyone in this world really have a have a soul mate… one special person made just for them?
There’s no guarantee that there’s one specific person waiting for you just over the horizon, tapping their foot and checking their watch, just waiting for you to show up. But that doesn’t necessarily mean God doesn’t have a soul mate for you if you will ask… and then keep on asking.
This part of life is like every other part—God wants to be included in the process. Finding your soul mate is really all about how you interact with God and his plan for you. For most of us not called to singleness (check out what Paul says about singleness in 1 Corinthians 7:7), God has a plan for our future romantic partnerships. He has someone in mind that will fulfill that part of our soul’s desired romantic connection. If we will include him in the process, then he will help us find the right person.
“Okay,” you say with frustration, “but how do I find this person?” In Matthew 7:7-8, Jesus tells us to, “Keep on asking, and you will receive what you ask for. Keep on seeking, and you will find. Keep on knocking, and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks, receives. Everyone who seeks, finds. And to everyone who knocks, the door will be opened.”
God’s will for our romantic lives can be found in the same way we seek him in every other part of our lives. We must ask. Pray. Read what the Bible says about love, romance, and marriage. Ask our spiritual mentors for guidance. The more we seek and the more we ask, the more God can reveal his answer to us over time.
So before getting frustrated or worried about not finding your soul mate, pause and take a breath. Have you asked God about him or her?
