The Resurrection
1 # For ver. 1-8, see Mark 16:1-8; Luke 24:1-10; John 20:1 Now after the Sabbath, toward the dawn of the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and #ch. 27:56, 61the other Mary went to see the tomb. 2And behold, there was a great earthquake, for #[John 20:12]an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and came and rolled back the stone and sat on it. 3#Dan. 10:6 His appearance was like lightning, and #[Dan. 7:9; Mark 9:3; John 20:12; Acts 1:10]his clothing white as snow. 4And for fear of him the guards trembled and #[Rev. 1:17]became like dead men. 5But the angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified. 6He is not here, for he has risen, #ch. 27:63as he said. Come, see the place where he#28:6 Some manuscripts the Lord lay. 7Then go quickly and tell his disciples that he has risen from the dead, and behold, #ver. 10, 16; ch. 26:32he is going before you to Galilee; there you will see him. See, I have told you.” 8So they departed quickly from the tomb #[Ps. 2:11]with fear and great joy, and ran to tell his disciples. 9And behold, Jesus #[Mark 16:9; John 20:14] met them and said, “Greetings!” And they came up and #2 Kgs. 4:27 took hold of his feet and #ver. 17; Luke 24:52worshiped him. 10Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid; #See John 20:18 go and tell #John 20:17; [Ps. 22:22; Rom. 8:29; Heb. 2:11, 12, 17]my brothers to go to Galilee, and there they will see me.”
The Report of the Guard
11While they were going, behold, some of #ch. 27:65, 66the guard went into the city and told the chief priests all that had taken place. 12And when they had assembled with the elders and taken counsel, they gave a sufficient sum of money to the soldiers 13and said, “Tell people, #[ch. 27:64]‘His disciples came by night and stole him away while we were asleep.’ 14And if this comes to #ch. 27:2 the governor’s ears, we will #See Acts 12:20 (Gk.)satisfy him and keep you out of trouble.” 15So they took the money and did as they were directed. And this story has been spread among the Jews #ch. 27:8to this day.
The Great Commission
16Now the eleven disciples #ver. 7went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. 17And when they saw him they #ver. 9worshiped him, but some doubted. 18And Jesus came and said to them, #ch. 11:27; Dan. 7:13, 14; John 3:35; 13:3; 17:2; Acts 2:36; Rom. 14:9; 1 Cor. 15:27; Eph. 1:10, 20-22; Phil. 2:9, 10; Col. 2:10; Heb. 1:2; 2:8; 1 Pet. 3:22; [ch. 9:6; John 5:27] “All authority #[ch. 6:10; Luke 2:14]in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19#Mark 16:15, 16 Go therefore and #ch. 13:52 make disciples of #Luke 24:47; [ch. 24:14; Mark 11:17; Rom. 1:5] all nations, #Mark 16:15, 16 baptizing them #See Acts 8:16 in#28:19 Or into#[2 Cor. 13:14]the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20teaching them #John 14:15 to observe all that #[Acts 1:2] I have commanded you.
