Jeremiah 46
46
Judgment on Egypt
1The word of the Lord that came to Jeremiah the prophet #[ch. 1:5; 25:13]; See ch. 25:15-26concerning the nations.
2About Egypt. #2 Kgs. 23:29; 2 Chr. 35:20 Concerning the army of Pharaoh Neco, king of Egypt, which was by the river Euphrates at Carchemish and which Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon defeated in #ch. 25:1; 36:1; 45:1the fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah:
3 # [ch. 51:11] “Prepare buckler and shield,
and advance for battle!
4 # [Nah. 3:2] Harness the horses;
mount, O horsemen!
Take your stations with your helmets,
# [See ver. 3 above] polish your spears,
put on your armor!
5Why have I seen it?
They are dismayed
and have turned backward.
Their #[2 Sam. 1:19, 25] warriors are beaten down
and have fled in haste;
# ver. 21; ch. 47:3 they look not back—
# See ch. 6:25 terror on every side!
declares the Lord.
6“The swift cannot flee away,
nor the warrior escape;
# [See ver. 2 above] in the north by the river Euphrates
# [Dan. 11:19] they have stumbled and fallen.
7“Who is this, #[ch. 47:2; Isa. 8:7, 8; Dan. 11:22] rising like the Nile,
like rivers #[Ezek. 32:2]whose waters surge?
8Egypt rises like the Nile,
like rivers #[See ver. 7 above]whose waters surge.
He said, ‘I will rise, I will cover the earth,
I will destroy cities and their inhabitants.’
9 #
Nah. 3:2; [Judg. 5:22] Advance, O horses,
and rage, O chariots!
Let the warriors go out:
men of Cush and #Ezek. 27:10 Put who handle the shield,
#
Isa. 66:19
men of Lud, skilled in handling the bow.
10 #
Isa. 13:9; Joel 1:15 That day is the day of the Lord God of hosts,
# ch. 50:15 a day of vengeance,
#
Isa. 1:24 to avenge himself on his foes.
# [ver. 14; Isa. 34:5] The sword shall devour and be sated
and drink its fill of their blood.
For the Lord God of hosts holds #[Isa. 34:6] a sacrifice
# ver. 6 in the north country #ver. 2by the river Euphrates.
11 # [ch. 8:22] Go up to Gilead, and take #[ch. 8:22] balm,
O virgin daughter of Egypt!
In vain you have used many medicines;
# [Ezek. 30:21] there is no healing for you.
12The nations have heard of your shame,
and the earth is full of your cry;
# ver. 6 for warrior has stumbled against warrior;
they have both fallen together.”
13The word that the Lord spoke to Jeremiah the prophet about the coming of #ch. 43:10, 11; 44:30; [Isa. 19:4; Ezek. 29:10]Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon to strike the land of Egypt:
14“Declare in Egypt, and proclaim in #See ch. 44:1 Migdol;
proclaim in #See ch. 44:1 Memphis and #See ch. 44:1 Tahpanhes;
say, #[ver. 3, 4] ‘Stand ready and be prepared,
for #[ver. 10]the sword shall devour around you.’
15Why are your mighty ones face down?
They do not stand#46:15 Hebrew He does not stand
because the Lord thrust them down.
16He made many stumble, #Lev. 26:37 and they fell,
and they said one to another,
‘Arise, and let us go back to our own people
and to the land of our birth,
# ch. 50:16 because of the sword of the oppressor.’
17Call the name of #[Isa. 30:7]Pharaoh, king of Egypt,
‘Noisy one who lets the hour go by.’
18 # See ch. 4:2 “As I live, declares the King,
# ch. 48:15; 51:57; Isa. 47:4; 48:2 whose name is the Lord of hosts,
like #Judg. 4:6 Tabor among the mountains
and like #1 Kgs. 18:42, 44Carmel by the sea, shall one come.
19 # [Ezek. 12:3] Prepare yourselves baggage for exile,
O #[ch. 48:18] inhabitants of Egypt!
For #See ch. 44:1 Memphis shall become a waste,
a ruin, #See ch. 4:7without inhabitant.
20“A beautiful #[Hos. 10:11] heifer is Egypt,
but a biting fly #ver. 6, 10, 24; See ch. 1:13from the north has come upon her.
21Even her hired soldiers in her midst
are like #Amos 6:4; Mal. 4:2 fattened calves;
yes, they have turned and fled together;
they did not stand,
for the day of their calamity has come upon them,
# ch. 50:27 the time of their punishment.
22“She makes #[Isa. 29:4] a sound like a serpent gliding away;
for her enemies march in force
and come against her with axes
# [Isa. 10:34; 14:8] like those who fell trees.
23 # [See ver. 22 above] They shall cut down her forest,
declares the Lord,
though it is impenetrable,
because #[Judg. 6:5; 7:12]they are more numerous than locusts;
they are without number.
24The daughter of Egypt shall be put to shame;
she shall be delivered into the hand of #[See ver. 20 above]a people from the north.”
25The Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, said: “Behold, I am bringing punishment upon #[Nah. 3:8] Amon of #Ezek. 30:14, 15, 16 Thebes, and Pharaoh and Egypt #See ch. 43:12and her gods and her kings, upon Pharaoh and those who trust in him. 26#ch. 44:30; Ezek. 30:4; 32:11 I will deliver them into the hand of those who seek their life, into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and his officers. #Ezek. 29:13, 14; See Isa. 19:22-25 Afterward Egypt shall be inhabited #Isa. 51:9as in the days of old, declares the Lord.
27 # See ch. 30:10, 11; Isa. 43:5 “But fear not, O Jacob my servant,
nor be dismayed, O Israel,
for behold, I will save you from far away,
and your offspring from the land of their captivity.
Jacob shall return and have quiet and ease,
and none shall make him afraid.
28 # [See ver. 27 above] Fear not, O Jacob my servant,
declares the Lord,
for I am with you.
I will make a full end of all the nations
to which I have driven you,
but of you I will not make a full end.
# ch. 10:24 I will discipline you in just measure,
and I will by no means leave you unpunished.”
