Hebrews 3

Jesus Greater Than Moses
1Therefore, holy brothers,#3:1 Or brothers and sisters; also verse 12 you who share in #Eph. 4:1; Phil. 3:14 a heavenly calling, consider Jesus, #[John 20:21; Rom. 15:8]the apostle and high priest of our confession, 2who was faithful to him who appointed him, #ver. 5just as Moses also was faithful in all God’s#3:2 Greek his; also verses 5, 6 house. 3For Jesus has been counted worthy of more glory than Moses—as much more glory as the builder of a house has more honor than the house itself. 4(For every house is built by someone, but #Eph. 2:10; 3:9the builder of all things is God.) 5#ver. 2; Cited from Num. 12:7 Now Moses was faithful in all God’s house #Ex. 14:31; Deut. 34:5; Josh. 1:2; 8:31; Ps. 105:26; Rev. 15:3 as a servant, #Deut. 18:15, 18, 19to testify to the things that were to be spoken later, 6but Christ is faithful over God’s house as #See ch. 1:2 a son. And #1 Cor. 3:16; 6:19; 2 Cor. 6:16; Eph. 2:21; 1 Tim. 3:15; 1 Pet. 2:5 we are his house, if indeed we #ver. 14; ch. 6:11; Ps. 119:33, 112; Matt. 10:22; Rev. 2:26hold fast our confidence and our boasting in our hope.#3:6 Some manuscripts insert firm to the end
A Rest for the People of God
7Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says,
# ver. 15; ch. 4:7; Cited from Ps. 95:7-11 “Today, if you hear his voice,
8do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion,
on the day of testing in the wilderness,
9where your fathers put me to the test
and saw my works for #See Acts 7:36forty years.
10Therefore I was provoked with that generation,
and said, ‘They always go astray in their heart;
they have not known my ways.’
11 # ch. 4:3, 5 As I swore in my wrath,
‘They shall not enter my rest.’”
12Take care, brothers, lest there be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart, leading you to fall away from #See Matt. 16:16the living God. 13But #[ch. 10:24, 25] exhort one another every day, as long as it is called “today,” that none of you may be hardened by #[Isa. 44:20; Rom. 7:11; Eph. 4:22]the deceitfulness of sin. 14For we have come to share in Christ, #ver. 6; ch. 10:23; 1 Cor. 15:2if indeed we hold our original confidence firm to the end. 15As it is said,
# [See ver. 7 above] “Today, if you hear his voice,
do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion.”
16For #Num. 14:2; Deut. 1:34, 35 who were those who heard and yet rebelled? Was it not #[Num. 14:24, 30; Deut. 1:36, 38]all those who left Egypt led by Moses? 17And with whom was he provoked for forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, #Num. 14:29; See Jude 5whose bodies fell in the wilderness? 18And to whom did he swear that #Deut. 1:34, 35; [ch. 4:2]they would not enter his rest, but to those who were disobedient? 19So we see that #ch. 4:6; Ps. 78:22; 106:24they were unable to enter because of unbelief.
