Sarah: Tired of Waiting
Sarah said, “God has brought me laughter, and everyone who hears about this will laugh with me.” —Genesis 21:6, NIV
I don’t know about you, but I am horrible at waiting for things. Once I know something is going to happen or a decision is made, I want to take action right away!
But God’s timing is very different from my own timing. And while I know his timing is perfect and best, sometimes I still want to move ahead.
Sarah, wife to the infamous Abraham and mother of the nation of Israel, also had difficulty waiting. In Genesis 15, God made a promise to Abraham that he would have more offspring than the stars in the sky. But his wife Sarah had not had any children yet and was past an age when most women had already had several children. So, Sarah took control.
She suggested that Abraham sleep with her maidservant, Hagar, so that God’s promise could be fulfilled for Abraham (Genesis 16). Thousands of years later, we might wonder how she thought she knew better than God. But the reality is we do that almost every day!
We overspend. We work to get our kids in the right program. We think if we have the right job or house or position, things will happen. But we are operating with just our finite knowledge.
God even sent confirmation to Abraham and Sarah later in Genesis 18. Visitors came and told them that when they returned in a year, Sarah would have a son. Sarah laughed at them! She had lost her ability to believe God would do what he promised. She was old. It was too late. It was physically impossible for her to have a baby anymore. But God.
God did what he promised. In his perfect timing.
What are you waiting for? God wants to know! Share your heart with him today, tomorrow and every day.
Challenge: Pray over a promise you’re waiting on and trust God with the outcome.
