In his letters, Paul also gives us some guidance on the new covenant, referring to Jesus he says, “For it is declared: You are a priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek,” indicating the end of the Levitical priesthood.
He deals with other issues previously required by the law in a different way, for example, about circumcision, which he argues is no longer necessary, but circumcised Timothy. About meats offered to idols he says: “We are no worse if we do not eat, and no better if we do.” And about sacred days he says: “One person considers one day more sacred than another; another considers every day alike. Each of them should be fully convinced in their own mind.” How can such diverse positions be equally accepted?
And he says, “But now, by dying to what once bound us, we have been released from the law so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit, and not in the old way of the written code,” and also: “He has made us competent as ministers of a new covenant—not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.”
