Sharing a Meal with Jesus

He went in to stay with them. When He was at table with them, He took the bread and blessed and broke it and gave it to them. And their eyes were opened, and they recognized Him.” (Luke 24:29-31)

Jesus had already offered the disciples two important things to help them overcome their disappointment: He had encouraged them to share their thoughts and emotions, and He had explained the Bible to them. Now He was sharing a meal with them. It was in the breaking of the bread that the disciples suddenly recognized Him!

Jesus breaking the bread had a much deeper meaning than just eating a meal. It was a symbolic act, as instituted on the evening before His death. We can read about this in Luke 22: “He took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to them, saying, ‘This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.’” Can you see the similarities to today’s verses — just as the disciples did?

Although Jesus is not physically present with us, we too can be “at table with Him”, as the Lord’s Supper is celebrated in remembrance of Jesus. Being close to Jesus can help us overcome our doubts and disappointments.

In Revelation 3:20, Jesus invites all of us personally. “Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me.” Have you let Him in? How is He present in your life?
