God's glory is awe-inspiring
“The glory of the Lord dwelt on Mount Sinai… Now the appearance of the glory of the Lord was like a devouring fire on the top of the mountain in the sight of the people of Israel.” (Exodus 24:16-17)
The book of Exodus tells us how God chose the Israelites to be His people. He wanted to make a covenant with them. With this covenant came laws for the people to keep. When the Lord announced these laws to the people from Mount Sinai, His appearance was very impressive. The people trembled in fear and asked Moses, “You speak to us, and we will listen; but do not let God speak to us, lest we die” (Exodus 20:19). From then on God spoke only to Moses and sometimes to a small group of leaders. Exodus 24 clearly shows us that these people could not simply come near to the Lord. They had to keep their distance from His appearance; He was too holy and too great. The sight of God's holiness was “like a devouring fire.” If you get too close to a fire, you burn. So it is also with God.
When you pray to the Lord God, are you aware of His holiness and greatness? Do you also experience a deep respect for His glory?
