Getting to Know the Prophets

DÍA 14 DE 30

Hosea

If all you know of the minor prophet Hosea is tied to the fictional character Michael Hosea from Redeeming Love, you might want to take some notes. Though it's possible that the biblical Hosea and Gomer experienced a chemistry-driven romance, it's more likely Hosea endured years of ongoing disappointment and rejection as a result of his wandering and whoring wife – similar to how God experienced ongoing disappointment and rejection from His wandering people, the Israelites. And that's the point.

Hosea was a prophet to Northern Israel, circa 760–725 BC, and assigned to deliver a hard message as a living example to Israel during a time of perceived prosperity. The significance of Hosea and Gomer's relationship is found in its correlation to the relationship God had with Israel and the future relationship Christ would have with His Bride, the Church. As you read today, look for these tropes throughout the text. How incredibly creative of God to use the life of Hosea and the language of poetry to reach His people then and now.

1. Has God ever used the life experience of another to serve as an example or encouragement in your walk with the Lord?

2. What do you think the names of Gomer's children represent? Spend some time in trusted sources researching their symbolism.

Prayer: Lord, Hosea's life was a living testimony to those watching. I, too, have people watching me. Help me reflect you in all I do.
