Comfort, comfort, and more comfort
The Good News is we have a “Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles.” 2 Corinthians 1:3
The God of ALL comfort, who comforts us in ALL our troubles. ALL OUR TROUBLES.
In this world we have many troubles, right? God promises to comfort us in every single one, big or small.
I remember a morning when I was filled with much pain, remembering many people who I had tried to love. I started thinking about all the things I did for each person. I wrote each thing down on little slips of paper. I told God, “All of my work was wasted.”
Right after that time of prayer, anguish, and blunt honesty with God, I went to church. The sermon was about the verse in Psalm 126:5-6. “Those who cry as they plant crops will sing at harvest time. Those who cry as they carry out the seeds will return singing and carrying bundles of grain.” I thought about all of those slips of paper from that morning and I realized those were my seeds. I remembered that He always will use the bad to make something good. A harvest will come.
I could tell story after story after story of all the special ways that God comforted me in my pain. He is the best at knowing what you need! The shepherd of your soul will take care of you.
But…. we need to admit that it is HARD to go to an invisible person for comfort. It is easy to use false comforters we can see, feel, and touch. Are you “numbing out” with anything (games on your phone, Netflix, social media, alcohol, staying busy, etc etc) instead of giving God your pain? Numbing out gives temporary relief but true comfort from the God of all comfort gives relief that lasts.
Response:
Ask Jesus, how do you want to comfort me right now? How have You already comforted me in ways that I overlook? How am I numbing out? Tell Him all of your honest anger, fears, and sorrow.
