Fasting Tips for Success
"When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show others they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full." (Matthew 6:16)
Jesus taught his disciples fasting. Jesus chose his ministry team after a long fast in the wilderness. He knew a thing or two about the discipline of seeking him. Here are a few fasting tips to help you during your time of consecration.
1. Pick a primary purpose for your fast. Ask God to give you a very specific request. Don’t go small. Go insanely big.
2. Journal every day. Take a few moments every day to write down what you hear the Spirit saying to you.
3. Repent, Repent, Repent. Ask the Lord to show you areas of your life that need to be cleansed. During a fast you become more sensitive to thoughts, actions, and attitudes that need to be cast away.
4. Pray for Grace to fast. This is not an act of supreme will power. God will give you a grace to fast if you ask him.
5. 72. That is the number of hours in which the hunger pains will be most intense. Breakthrough the first few days and you will be shocked at the energy you will have.
6. Do I tell anyone? It is not a sin to tell others you are fasting. You don’t have to broadcast it for spiritual accolades but simply can let others know so you don’t seem rude for not eating or turning down a meal appointment.
7. Say "no" to say "yes." Fasting without prayer and the word is a horrible diet. Take time to spend more time in God's word and in prayer. During your fast read books on fasting and prayer.
