God, Protect My Children
The phrase, “God, protect my children” may be a quick plea to the Lord as we shoo our kids out the door, but do we really understand why we can trust God to protect them? In our verse today, Paul expresses confidence in God’s faithfulness. He proclaims that God can be trusted to protect the Thessalonians from evil. Because God is faithful, we can rest in the assurance that He will not allow evil to gain victory over believers.
Lamentations 3:22-23 reads, “Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.” So, what is faithfulness and why is it an essential attribute of God? The Hebrew word translated “faithfulness” means steadfastness, firmness, fidelity. That means that God is never wishy-washy. He is characterized by steadfastness!
In our verse today, Paul declares that God will firmly establish believers on the inside and shield them on the outside from the evil one.
We trust God when we know Him. As we grow to know Him more, we can rest in His goodness, even when we don’t understand the circumstances. Just like we want our child to trust us as a loving parent, we can trust our heavenly Father to always do what is right.
Let’s pray together for our children’s protection, understanding that God’s faithfulness is the foundation of that prayer.
Suggested Prayer:
Father God, I find comfort in Your faithfulness. I agree with Paul’s statement that You are faithful and that You will protect my children from the evil one. I’m thankful that Your compassion never fails. May my children grow to understand Your faithfulness and rest in Your goodness. When difficult circumstances come into their lives, may they rest in You.
Lord, I also pray for children around the world who don’t have the same privileges as mine. The children who also need prayer for Your protection, who may be growing up without hope. Protect them, Father. May they see Your goodness too, even though circumstances are difficult. May they rest in the peace that they are loved by You. Even when they are surrounded by despair—rough neighborhoods, drugs, sex trafficking, war, crimes—may You be their shelter. Please provide a healthy community and a safe haven for them to turn to in times of trouble.
