Who’s in Charge?
Terrorism … war … violence … global warming … nature on the rampage … world-wide economic collapse … and on, and on, and on. Doesn’t it make you wonder who really is in charge? Is anyone in control? Where are we headed? Is there any hope for the future? Aren’t we really asking, “What about me?” What is the hope for my future based on? The Sons of Korah, the authors of Psalm 48, knew the answers to these questions from experience. So, who were the Sons of Korah, and what did they know?
The Sons of Korah were the doorkeepers and musicians of the temple in the time of Moses. Psalm 46-48 are beautiful examples of their songwriting that have been preserved for us even today. In Psalm 48 they write of three things: That God will reign in Zion; that He will ruin the enemy; and that He will rule in lovingkindness.
In writing about who is in control, they first describe God’s reign. It will be from Zion, it will reach the whole earth (both Jew and Gentile) including a reign over other gods, and it will be a refuge – literally the City of the Great King – a statement of the Messiah, Jesus Christ.
They also state that when His kingdom is attacked, a reference to the end times and the battle scene during the tribulation, He will have victory over those who attack. It will be the ultimate victory when Christ returns because He will then establish His eternal kingdom through Christ.
Finally, they sing of His rule over His kingdom. It will be one of lovingkindness as He will rule as a Judge full of righteousness, as a Father who brings joy to His children, and as a Shepherd who guides His flock forever.
The Sons of Korah tell us that we should not fear tomorrow because our God is already there, and He is still in charge. He will reign over all, He will ruin our enemies, and He will rule with loving kindness. Therefore, let us praise Him for who He is, prepare for Him for what He will do, and proclaim Him for what He has done.
Is He in charge of your future?
