All Sons & Daughters - Devotional

DAY 1 OF 7

You Will Remain

Trust is built on the assurance that someone is:

Dependable

Of good character

Truthful

Strong

Able

There was a time in the past where a man’s name carried his reputation with it. A father’s name was passed down to his children as well as the value of what people thought of him.

Men would go to great lengths to have their name be one of honor. They would be trustworthy, they would be kind, they would be dependable, they would be generous, they would be hardworking and then everything that their name was attached to would be something that was trusted as if it were the man himself. Even a man’s children and grandchildren could benefit from his care for his name and what other people believed about his name. Every time someone else expressed this man’s trustworthiness in business or generosity or his promises kept, they would be contributing to the honor of the man’s name.

The more right living there is in the man’s life, the more value his name would have. This leads to God’s hallowed name.

In Exodus 3:13, 14 Moses says to God, “Suppose I go to the People of Israel and I tell them, ‘The God of your fathers sent me to you’; and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ What do I tell them?” God then responded to Moses by saying, “I-AM-WHO-I-AM. Tell the People of Israel, ‘I-AM sent me to you.’” R.C. Sproul says of these verses, “The Lord is not defined or determined by any other than Himself. As the self existent One, His promise is sure; He will reveal Himself in His saving deeds.” This means that we do not decide if God is trustworthy by looking at humanity but by looking at Him.

He alone is the ruler by which we can measure His character, ability, strength and honesty. When we do this, we can look back on history and see that He is worthy of our trust now. We see that there has never been any variation in Him or “shadow due to change” (James 1:17) and that there never will be because He is who He is. When everything else is unreliable, untrustworthy, too weak, or fades away He, the great “I Am,” will remain.
