Honor God With Your Relationships: Serving people, not using people
By nature the human brain is hardwired for personal gratification. Actually noticing what other people need, caring whether they are okay or not, and bestirring oneself to do something for another is learned behavior.
It is learned from Christ. The One who washed his disciples’ feet one Thursday evening was dead on a cross on Friday afternoon. “I came not to be served, but to serve,” he said. It is from Christ that we get not only the example of service above self but also the energy and the desire to do it.
St. Paul taught his friends in central Asia Minor (today’s Turkey), “You, my brothers, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the sinful nature; rather, serve one another in love” (Galatians 5:13).
It is an absolutely splendid way to spend yourself--your time, your energy, your treasure--to make someone else’s life better. Don’t begrudge a minute of it.
