Lois and Eunice: Legacy of Faith
I am reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also. —2 Timothy 1:5, NIV
My mom was one of six children and the youngest daughter. They lived a very simple life with love and faith at the center. My grandmother was not one who used many words to live out her faith, but I remember her sitting at the table in the morning with her Bible and cup of coffee.
I was a teenager when my grandma passed, and I knew she loved Jesus. When we used to visit her, the one nonnegotiable was going to church. Even as a little girl, I remember sitting next to her and my mom with their hands in mine as we listened to the preacher. It is their faith and their lives that led me to Jesus.
In 2 Timothy, we learn about Lois and Eunice. There isn’t much written about them or how they came to faith, but we do know that their faith was “sincere” (2 Timothy 1:5, NIV). These women modeled their faith, and others recognized it. That legacy of faith was passed to Timothy. These women held no high position or wealth. They likely faced significant challenges, both culturally and in raising Timothy, but they remained anchored in their faith. Together, their influence shaped Timothy, and God used him as a leader alongside Paul to shape the early church.
As moms, we can learn from Lois and Eunice how to pass down a critical piece of our lives: our faith. I often feel the weight and responsibility of teaching my children and grandchildren to know and love Jesus. It can feel overwhelming. But living a life of faith doesn’t require perfection nor does it ask us to pursue perfection. Instead, it is about pointing our kids to a perfect Savior.
I am a grandma now, and I daily pray that my daughter and grandkids would see Jesus in me. I want nothing more than to leave a legacy for them like Lois and Eunice did for Timothy. As I walk with Jesus, I am reminded that my faith in Jesus and how I love and invest in people can influence generations to come. God sees you and your efforts to live in a way that honors him, and he will be faithful to you. Trust his promises and trust that the seeds you plant and the investments you make will grow exponentially.
