Salome: A Mother’s Misguided Love
“What is it you want?” he asked.
She said, “Grant that one of these two sons of mine may sit at your right and the other at your left in your kingdom.” —Matthew 20:21, NIV
We all love our kids so fiercely that we want to secure their future, their success and their significance. Salome, the mother of James and John, was no different. Her love for her sons led her to ask Jesus for something bold: “Grant that one of these two sons of mine may sit at your right and the other at your left in your kingdom” (Matthew 20:21, NIV).
It’s easy to judge her for this request, but let’s take a moment to understand her heart. Salome believed in Jesus’ authority and trusted that he would reign as King. She wanted her sons to be as close to him as possible, sharing in his glory. What mother wouldn’t want the best for her children?
But Jesus’ response reframed her perspective. He gently pointed out that she didn’t fully understand what she was asking. He says, “Can you drink the cup I am going to drink?” (Matthew 20:22, NIV). Salome’s vision of glory didn’t yet include the suffering and sacrifice that came with following Jesus.
Salome’s story is a powerful reminder for us as moms. Sometimes, out of love, we pray for outcomes we think are best for our kids—success, recognition, comfort— but God’s plans often lead us in unexpected directions. Jesus didn’t rebuke Salome for her love or ambition for her sons. Instead, he lovingly redirected her, teaching her (and us) that true greatness in his kingdom comes through humility, sacrifice and serving others.
Moms, it’s okay to dream big for your children, but let Salome’s story remind us to align those dreams with God’s heart. Instead of asking for worldly success, let’s pray for our children to know Jesus deeply, to follow him faithfully and to live lives that glorify him, even when the road is hard.
Challenge: Reflect on your prayers for your children. Are you focused on what seems best in your eyes, or are you trusting God’s greater plan for their lives? Surrender your dreams to him and pray for your children to walk closely with Jesus, no matter what path that takes them on. Let Salome’s story encourage you to trust God’s plans over your own.
