In these verses, Jesus is speaking to His disciples about love, obedience, and most importantly, the coming of the Holy Spirit. Jesus starts off with a powerful statement: “If you love me, keep my commands.” He isn’t saying this simply as a call for obedience, but in reality, it’s an invitation for us to establish a deeper relationship with Him. Our love for Christ is demonstrated through our actions and choices.

When we reflect on our own lives, some questions we may ask ourselves include: How do we express our love for Jesus? Are we living in a way that aligns with His teachings? This passage challenges us to consider the connection between love and obedience. True love for Christ naturally leads to a desire to follow His commands, as this passage reminds us.

Jesus continues on by promising to send an Advocate—The Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is our helper. It guides us, teaches us, and reminds us of Jesus' words. Amidst all the uncertainties and confusions of our world, this one promise offers a sense of comfort and reassurance. The presence of the Holy Spirit within us signifies God’s unwavering and enduring relationship with His people. He will never abandon us.
