To every one of us, God has given us gifts, callings, and passions. The apostle Paul compares these gifts to a flame, urging us to kindle and nurture it so that it may grow. As followers of Jesus, it’s important to stoke this flame because the fire God has ignited in us is not meant to flicker. It’s meant to illuminate. The fires of our divine giftings blaze the path from which others may know and follow the Lord, just as the fire that reigned down from heaven through the prophet Elijah led the followers of Baal to the true God.
We are given the task of consistently stewarding the flame. The gifts that we have can grow cold if we neglect our responsibility to take care of them. Throughout our lives, we may become distracted from tending to the fire because of challenges, doubts, and pressures. So how do we stay vigilant in nurturing the passion and calling that God has placed in each of us?
God promises us His Spirit, which empowers us with love and self-discipline to not only sustain but grow the flame of our giftings. Fueling the fire is not a one-time moment, but rather an ongoing process of caring for it. The way we can depend on God is through daily spiritual disciplines that teach us to love and rely on him.
The prophet Elijah made the choice to boldly commit to God, not only stoking the flame of his own faith but others in his community. If God is the source of our flame, then we must depend on Him daily to sustain it.

God has sparked a flame of spiritual gifts within all of us and now it’s our responsibility to stoke the fire. So how can we not only steward our fire, but see it grow through God’s power to make an impact in our community? This 4-day devotional looks at the example of the prophet Elijah, who trusted in God and saw the fire of heaven fall down, leading to the people of Israel being transformed.
