Prepare: Positioned for God's Purposes

DAY 3 OF 6

Luke 3 opens with a “Who’s Who” of the power players in John’s day—rulers, governors, and high priests with influence and platforms. If they lived today, they’d dominate podcasts and bestseller lists. Yet verse two tells us God’s word didn’t come to them. Instead, it came to John the Baptist—a man in the wilderness, far from the spotlight.

Why does God bypass kings to call wilderness preachers instead?

John was faithful. Long before crowds followed him across the Judean countryside, he lived wholly devoted to God’s call. Luke 1:80 tells us he “became strong in spirit, and he was in the wilderness until the day of his public appearance.” His faith wasn’t tied to comfort or status. Matthew 3:4-6 describes his lifestyle—cut off from societal luxuries, yet steadfast in staying positioned for God’s kingdom, a mission entrusted to him years earlier.

God chose John because he was in position for His purposes. This reminds us that placement in God’s kingdom isn’t about prominence but about presence. Many are distracted from God’s purposes today because their hearts are consumed with comparison or covetousness. The enemy whispers that our worth depends on platforms, convincing us to uproot and chase recognition. When we believe this, people and character become pawns in the kingdom of self.

This is the opposite of what our Lord desires. In Mark 3:13-15, Jesus chose His disciples “that they might be with Him.” His first priority wasn’t their ability, influence, or credentials—it was their presence. He valued relationship over performance, knowing transformation flows from intimacy with Him. John 15 reminds us to abide, warning, “apart from [Him] you can do nothing.” Relational proximity to Christ positions us for His kingdom work.

The world clamors for influence, but God seeks those whose hearts are fully His. Abide in Christ, stand firm where He has placed you, and steward what He has entrusted with unwavering faith—especially in unseen places.

REFLECTION:
Are you distracted by comparison or covetousness? How could you reclaim a God-centered “position” in your current season?
