What Was The Original Design of the World?

If you grew up in the church or have ever attempted to read through your Bible from cover to cover, then you’ve read Genesis 1—the creation story. In six days, God creates the world, from the land to the sea to the animals to us humans. Then, on the seventh day, God rested.

Today, I want us to look at just the first two verses of the creation story because those two verses and the story of Adam and Eve give us a look into this idea of the spiritual realm. We read that God created the heavens and the earth. In the original language, the heavens were not understood as the solar system or the sky and space above us. The most basic understanding was “God’s space.” Man had his space; that was earth. And God has His space; that was heaven. But as we read through Genesis 1-3, we learn that God isn't limited to His space. Genesis 3:8 says, “Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the LORD God as He was walking in the garden.” Creation was designed to overlap with God’s space. Heaven and Earth weren’t intended to be completely separate. God would go between them, inviting men and women to experience the spiritual realm differently than we do today. But because of the fall in Genesis 3, our world looks different. Sin entered the story, separating humans from God and requiring a plan for us to be reunited with our Creator. But God had a plan...
