GLEANINGS - Numbers

DAY 30 OF 30

Seek the Lord in all things.

Zelophehad had five daughters, but he had no sons. But now that he was dead, the issue was who got that land apportioned to Zelophehad?

So, his daughters in Numbers 27 came and told Moses, “We don’t think it is right that we don't get an inheritance in the land just because there are no boys in the family.” Moses sought the Lord, so the Lord told him, “The daughters of Zelophehad got a point. They’re right. You ought to transfer the inheritance to them.”

Notice the Lord didn’t just say, “Yes, they can live in it,” but “transfer the whole legal right of the property to these daughters.” Then, this became the general statute for every case where the father had no son.

That’s the first significant instance where we have this ruling surrounding the daughters of Zelophehad.

Then, in Numbers 36, Moses revisits this case with an extra ruling to help clarify what’s happening. The extra ruling stated that when the inheritance went to a girl, to have the inheritance, she had to marry within the tribe that she was from so there wouldn't be a dividing of the lands between the tribes. The tribes had defined borders, and marriages wouldn't mix up the land. So whenever the girls inherited the land, they needed to marry someone from that tribe to keep the inheritance of the land. Otherwise, it was to be given to other tribes toders. Avoid confusion of land and borders.

God has an answer to all our situations!

These women tenaciously held on to the promises of God, even when their circumstances were less than favourable.

1. They had faith as they trusted in God’s provision for them.

These women were single women. They could have played the victim card and moped about being orphans with no brothers and no land. They could have gone from tent to tent complaining. They could have rushed into marriage to solve their problem themselves. But they did not. These noble, godly women trusted that God would provide for them.

2. They did not live for the present. They had faith in God’s promises of a land to come.

The land these women were asking for, they had never seen. The daughters of Zelophehad believed in a land to come. They believed it was good, and they wanted an inheritance there.

3. They believed God could use them to bring about change!

These five women dared to approach leaders to make a change! As a result of their faith, they were given a portion just the same as the men. They gained an inheritance for themselves and for ALL women for generations to come!

Application Questions:

Will you dare to challenge something in this world that you know is wrong and push to make it right? Are you willing to make a difference for generations to come? Are you living for eternity today?

Quote:

Nothing paralyses our lives like the attitude that things can never change. We need to remind ourselves that God can change things. Outlook determines the outcome. If we see only the problems, we will be defeated, but if we see the possibilities in the problems, we can have victory. - Warren Wiersbe

Prayer:

"Lord, please guide me to become an agent of change in today's world. Amen."
