Why have you let the boys live?&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v18" data-usfm="EXO.1.18"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v19" data-usfm="EXO.1.19"><span class="label">19</span><span class="content">The midwives answered Pharaoh, &#8220;Hebrew women are not like Egyptian women; they are vigorous and give birth before the midwives arrive.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v19" data-usfm="EXO.1.19"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v20" data-usfm="EXO.1.20"><span class="label">20</span><span class="content">So God was kind to the midwives and the people increased and became even more numerous. </span></span><span class="verse v21" data-usfm="EXO.1.21"><span class="label">21</span><span class="content">And because the midwives feared God, he gave them families of their own.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v21" data-usfm="EXO.1.21"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v22" data-usfm="EXO.1.22"><span class="label">22</span><span class="content">Then Pharaoh gave this order to all his people: &#8220;Every Hebrew boy that is born you must throw into the Nile, but let every girl live.&#8221;</span></span></div>

         <div class="label">2</div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">The Birth of Moses</span></div><div class="p"><span class="content">  </span><span class="verse v1" data-usfm="EXO.2.1"><span class="label">1</span><span class="content">Now a man of the tribe of Levi married a Levite woman, </span></span><span class="verse v2" data-usfm="EXO.2.2"><span class="label">2</span><span class="content">and she became pregnant and gave birth to a son. When she saw that he was a fine child, she hid him for three months. </span></span><span class="verse v3" data-usfm="EXO.2.3"><span class="label">3</span><span class="content">But when she could hide him no longer, she got a papyrus basket</span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class=" body"><span class="fr">2:3 </span><span class="ft">The Hebrew can also mean </span><span class="fqa">ark</span><span class="ft">, as in Gen. 6:14.</span></span></span><span class="content"> for him and coated it with tar and pitch. Then she placed the child in it and put it among the reeds along the bank of the Nile. </span></span><span class="verse v4" data-usfm="EXO.2.4"><span class="label">4</span><span class="content">His sister stood at a distance to see what would happen to him.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v4" data-usfm="EXO.2.4"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v5" data-usfm="EXO.2.5"><span class="label">5</span><span class="content">Then Pharaoh&#8217;s daughter went down to the Nile to bathe, and her attendants were walking along the riverbank. She saw the basket among the reeds and sent her female slave to get it. </span></span><span class="verse v6" data-usfm="EXO.2.6"><span class="label">6</span><span class="content">She opened it and saw the baby. He was crying, and she felt sorry for him. &#8220;This is one of the Hebrew babies,&#8221; she said.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v6" data-usfm="EXO.2.6"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v7" data-usfm="EXO.2.7"><span class="label">7</span><span class="content">Then his sister asked Pharaoh&#8217;s daughter, &#8220;Shall I go and get one of the Hebrew women to nurse the baby for you?&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v7" data-usfm="EXO.2.7"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v8" data-usfm="EXO.2.8"><span class="label">8</span><span class="content">&#8220;Yes, go,&#8221; she answered. So the girl went and got the baby&#8217;s mother. </span></span><span class="verse v9" data-usfm="EXO.2.9"><span class="label">9</span><span class="content">Pharaoh&#8217;s daughter said to her, &#8220;Take this baby and nurse him for me, and I will pay you.&#8221; So the woman took the baby and nursed him. </span></span><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="EXO.2.10"><span class="label">10</span><span class="content">When the child grew older, she took him to Pharaoh&#8217;s daughter and he became her son. She named him Moses,</span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class=" body"><span class="fr">2:10 </span><span class="fq">Moses </span><span class="ft">sounds like the Hebrew for </span><span class="fqa">draw out.</span></span></span><span class="content"> saying, &#8220;I drew him out of the water.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">Moses Flees to Midian</span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="EXO.2.10"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="EXO.2.11"><span class="label">11</span><span class="content">One day, after Moses had grown up, he went out to where his own people were and watched them at their hard labor. He saw an Egyptian beating a Hebrew, one of his own people. </span></span><span class="verse v12" data-usfm="EXO.2.12"><span class="label">12</span><span class="content">Looking this way and that and seeing no one, he killed the Egyptian and hid him in the sand. </span></span><span class="verse v13" data-usfm="EXO.2.13"><span class="label">13</span><span class="content">The next day he went out and saw two Hebrews fighting. He asked the one in the wrong, &#8220;Why are you hitting your fellow Hebrew?&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v13" data-usfm="EXO.2.13"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v14" data-usfm="EXO.2.14"><span class="label">14</span><span class="content">The man said, &#8220;Who made you ruler and judge over us? Are you thinking of killing me as you killed the Egyptian?&#8221; Then Moses was afraid and thought, &#8220;What I did must have become known.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v14" data-usfm="EXO.2.14"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v15" data-usfm="EXO.2.15"><span class="label">15</span><span class="content">When Pharaoh heard of this, he tried to kill Moses, but Moses fled from Pharaoh and went to live in Midian, where he sat down by a well. </span></span><span class="verse v16" data-usfm="EXO.2.16"><span class="label">16</span><span class="content">Now a priest of Midian had seven daughters, and they came to draw water and fill the troughs to water their father&#8217;s flock. </span></span><span class="verse v17" data-usfm="EXO.2.17"><span class="label">17</span><span class="content">Some shepherds came along and drove them away, but Moses got up and came to their rescue and watered their flock.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v17" data-usfm="EXO.2.17"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v18" data-usfm="EXO.2.18"><span class="label">18</span><span class="content">When the girls returned to Reuel their father, he asked them, &#8220;Why have you returned so early today?&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v18" data-usfm="EXO.2.18"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v19" data-usfm="EXO.2.19"><span class="label">19</span><span class="content">They answered, &#8220;An Egyptian rescued us from the shepherds. He even drew water for us and watered the flock.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v19" data-usfm="EXO.2.19"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v20" data-usfm="EXO.2.20"><span class="label">20</span><span class="content">&#8220;And where is he?&#8221; Reuel asked his daughters. &#8220;Why did you leave him? Invite him to have something to eat.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v20" data-usfm="EXO.2.20"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v21" data-usfm="EXO.2.21"><span class="label">21</span><span class="content">Moses agreed to stay with the man, who gave his daughter Zipporah to Moses in marriage. </span></span><span class="verse v22" data-usfm="EXO.2.22"><span class="label">22</span><span class="content">Zipporah gave birth to a son, and Moses named him Gershom,</span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class=" body"><span class="fr">2:22 </span><span class="fq">Gershom </span><span class="ft">sounds like the Hebrew for </span><span class="fq">a foreigner </span><span class="fqa">there.</span></span></span><span class="content"> saying, &#8220;I have become a foreigner in a foreign land.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v22" data-usfm="EXO.2.22"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v23" data-usfm="EXO.2.23"><span class="label">23</span><span class="content">During that long period, the king of Egypt died. The Israelites groaned in their slavery and cried out, and their cry for help because of their slavery went up to God. </span></span><span class="verse v24" data-usfm="EXO.2.24"><span class="label">24</span><span class="content">God heard their groaning and he remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac and with Jacob. </span></span><span class="verse v25" data-usfm="EXO.2.25"><span class="label">25</span><span class="content">So God looked on the Israelites and was concerned about them.</span></span></div>

And I saw a beast coming out of the sea. It had ten horns and seven heads, with ten crowns on its horns, and on each head a blasphemous name. </span></span><span class="verse v2" data-usfm="REV.13.2"><span class="label">2</span><span class="content">The beast I saw resembled a leopard, but had feet like those of a bear and a mouth like that of a lion. The dragon gave the beast his power and his throne and great authority. </span></span><span class="verse v3" data-usfm="REV.13.3"><span class="label">3</span><span class="content">One of the heads of the beast seemed to have had a fatal wound, but the fatal wound had been healed. The whole world was filled with wonder and followed the beast. </span></span><span class="verse v4" data-usfm="REV.13.4"><span class="label">4</span><span class="content">People worshiped the dragon because he had given authority to the beast, and they also worshiped the beast and asked, &#8220;Who is like the beast? Who can wage war against it?&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v4" data-usfm="REV.13.4"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v5" data-usfm="REV.13.5"><span class="label">5</span><span class="content">The beast was given a mouth to utter proud words and blasphemies and to exercise its authority for forty-two months. </span></span><span class="verse v6" data-usfm="REV.13.6"><span class="label">6</span><span class="content">It opened its mouth to blaspheme God, and to slander his name and his dwelling place and those who live in heaven. </span></span><span class="verse v7" data-usfm="REV.13.7"><span class="label">7</span><span class="content">It was given power to wage war against God&#8217;s holy people and to conquer them. And it was given authority over every tribe, people, language and nation. </span></span><span class="verse v8" data-usfm="REV.13.8"><span class="label">8</span><span class="content">All inhabitants of the earth will worship the beast&#8212;all whose names have not been written in the Lamb&#8217;s book of life, the Lamb who was slain from the creation of the world.</span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class=" body"><span class="fr">13:8 </span><span class="ft">Or </span><span class="fqa">written from the creation of the world in the book of life belonging to the Lamb who was slain</span></span></span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v8" data-usfm="REV.13.8"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v9" data-usfm="REV.13.9"><span class="label">9</span><span class="content">Whoever has ears, let them hear.</span></span></div><div class="q1"><span class="verse v9" data-usfm="REV.13.9"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="REV.13.10"><span class="label">10</span><span class="content">&#8220;If anyone is to go into captivity,</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="REV.13.10"><span class="content">into captivity they will go.</span></span></div><div class="q1"><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="REV.13.10"><span class="content">If anyone is to be killed</span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class=" body"><span class="fr">13:10 </span><span class="ft">Some manuscripts </span><span class="fqa">anyone kills</span></span></span><span class="content"> with the sword,</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="REV.13.10"><span class="content">with the sword they will be killed.&#8221;</span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class=" body"><span class="fr">13:10 </span><span class="ft">Jer. 15:2</span></span></span></span></div><div class="m"><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="REV.13.10"><span class="content">This calls for patient endurance and faithfulness on the part of God&#8217;s people.</span></span></div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">The Beast out of the Earth</span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="REV.13.10"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="REV.13.11"><span class="label">11</span><span class="content">Then I saw a second beast, coming out of the earth. It had two horns like a lamb, but it spoke like a dragon. </span></span><span class="verse v12" data-usfm="REV.13.12"><span class="label">12</span><span class="content">It exercised all the authority of the first beast on its behalf, and made the earth and its inhabitants worship the first beast, whose fatal wound had been healed. </span></span><span class="verse v13" data-usfm="REV.13.13"><span class="label">13</span><span class="content">And it performed great signs, even causing fire to come down from heaven to the earth in full view of the people. </span></span><span class="verse v14" data-usfm="REV.13.14"><span class="label">14</span><span class="content">Because of the signs it was given power to perform on behalf of the first beast, it deceived the inhabitants of the earth. It ordered them to set up an image in honor of the beast who was wounded by the sword and yet lived. </span></span><span class="verse v15" data-usfm="REV.13.15"><span class="label">15</span><span class="content">The second beast was given power to give breath to the image of the first beast, so that the image could speak and cause all who refused to worship the image to be killed. </span></span><span class="verse v16" data-usfm="REV.13.16"><span class="label">16</span><span class="content">It also forced all people, great and small, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hands or on their foreheads, </span></span><span class="verse v17" data-usfm="REV.13.17"><span class="label">17</span><span class="content">so that they could not buy or sell unless they had the mark, which is the name of the beast or the number of its name.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v17" data-usfm="REV.13.17"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v18" data-usfm="REV.13.18"><span class="label">18</span><span class="content">This calls for wisdom. Let the person who has insight calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man.</span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class=" body"><span class="fr">13:18 </span><span class="ft">Or </span><span class="fqa">is humanity&#8217;s number</span></span></span><span class="content"> That number is 666.</span></span></div>
