Sin: Human Depravity
Read: Romans 3:9-23
SOAP: Romans 3:10-12
“just as it is written: “There is no one righteous, not even one; there is no one who understands; there is no one who seeks God. All have turned away; together they have become worthless; there is no one who shows kindness, not even one.”
Into the Text
It is important to know that the doctrine of total depravity is an extension of the doctrine of sin. It's a doctrine that is important to understand because it helps us better see our need for Jesus. Romans 3:10-12 reminds us that sin affects every part of our lives—our thoughts, emotions, actions, and relationships.
Total depravity challenges the common belief that people are inherently good. Instead, it shows us that our sinfulness is systematic and widespread. When we compare our lives to God's holy standard, we see that what we might consider good on a human level falls incredibly short. There is no amount of human goodness that will ever make up for our sins or catch us up to God’s holiness. Sin has corrupted us deeply, leaving us unable to do good on our own, no matter how hard we try.
This is where the beauty of the gospel shines the brightest. Despite our inability to save ourselves, God steps in with His mercy and grace. Mercy is not getting what we deserve, and grace is getting what we do not deserve. God reaches out to us in love, offering redemption and transformation through faith in Jesus Christ (Ephesians 2:8-9).
It's important to remember that our efforts cannot solve our sin problem. Only God can change our hearts. By His grace, He gifts believers with the indwelling Holy Spirit so that through His work and our obedience, we are enabled to do good and live a life of righteousness.
As Christians, understanding total depravity should lead us to compassion for those who don't know Jesus. Their actions are influenced by their fallen nature. This should drive us to share the gospel with urgency and love. We know that only God can bring true change and freedom from sin.
Prayer
Dear Jesus, thank you for your grace. Help me to understand the depth of my sin and the greatness of your mercy. Transform my heart and life by your Spirit. Use me to share your love and truth with those who don't know you. In your name, Amen.
